How The Assistance House Began

Col. Richard Enderlin was a Medal of Honor recipient during the Civil War. He was also a man deeply concerned about the plight of the poor. If a job-seeker came to his factory (Union Shoe Factory) and their footwear seemed insufficient, Richard would give them a pair of shoes.

He also started a charity here in Chillicothe called “The Welfare House.” What was remarkable about it was that, at the time of its founding in 1914, the charity had non-discrimination written into its charter.

“The said corporation is formed for the purpose of establishing, maintaining and conducting an institution, free to all persons, regardless of age, race, color, religious or political affiliations, to whom, temporarily and in emergencies, may be dispensed charity, aid, relief, medical treatment and nursing...”

It’s known as the Assistance House today, and it still has the same mission - to help the people of Chillicothe, including buying shoes.

The Assistance House Today

110 years later, The Assistance House has grown into a program that has stayed true to the philanthropy of Col. Enderlin. We offer help to the working class who are just having trouble making ends meet.   With the support of amazing donors, board members, office staff and volunteers, we are offering more programs than ever before. In addition to rent and utility assistance, we also offer a back-to-work program, a back-to-school program, help with eyeglasses, and diapers and wipes. Please consider supporting The Assistance House of Ross County in their efforts by making a donation today and help us

help working families in our community.
